Virginia Tech/Virginia Cooperative Extension is teaching free SNAP Ed Nutrition Classes for the community.
During COVID, the classes are being offered via three other options until September.
The three types of classes being offered are:
Online courses that can be done at participants' own pace (English and Spanish)
Over the phone (English only)
Zoom classes (one on one or as a group) this would be English only or in Spanish if callers can provide a translator
The classes teach how to read labels, shop on a budget (and how to use and stretch SNAP $), plan and eat healthy meals/snacks for you and your family, and exercise at home.
The Zoom classes will be four lessons about 45 minutes to an hour, the phone lessons will be 6 lessons about 25 minutes. These lessons are once a week whenever they are available. The online classes they at their own pace and complete whenever they have time. They are 6 short lessons and take about 4 hours total. After completing the program, participants will receive several items pictured in the flyer mailed to their home: a set of measuring cups, a reusable shopping bag, cutting board, exercise band/video, vegetable scrubber, and water bottle.
